We spoke to Nadia Shamsi, daughter of Jessica Vartoughian founder of Jessica nails as part of our International Women’s Day series.
Why do you think it is important to recognize, and celebrate International Women’s Day?
Women have come a long way. We are proud, hardworking and deserve a day to celebrate all women.
Are there any situations where being a woman has positively affected your career?
I have never felt uncomfortable being a woman. In school I learned that I need to be positive and strong and I have always used that to my advantage. I think being in the beauty industry has a positive affect as a woman. You are able to understand womens needs in a better way!
What are you most proud of achieving in your career?
I am most proud that I can follow my moms footsteps and carry on her legacy.
Which woman do you admire the most and why?
It would definitely have to be my mom. She had an amazing work ethic, always dedicated to her company and had a very kind and giving heart.
What is the most important advice you have been given?
Honesty is the best policy and a lot of my moms past employees tell me to be stronger! I’m trying.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
I wish I joined the business when I was fresh out of college.
What inspires you?
I am inspired to see so many successful women making it in the world. I love hearing their stories.
What are your must-have beauty products?
I am very big on eyebrows. Mine are done every two weeks. A tweezer in between is a must. Also, I always wear sunblock, rain or shine. Last, I always have some sort of cuticle oil with me. My nails are very important to me.
Do you have any additional comments or highlights you’d like to share?
My second daughter, Amira, is born on March 8….Women’s Day! Since she was born 13 years ago, it has become an even bigger deal in our household! She’s so proud to be born on such a special day and I am so proud to call her my daughter.
Nadia’s interview concludes our celebration of women throughout March.
