Celebrating 30 years At Gerrard International
Our very special Sales Director, Mandy Cook is celebrating 30 years at Gerrard International. Aside from leading our team of Area Managers, she’s an integral part of the company’s success and is involved in all aspects of the business from training, new product development to promotional and sales planning.
When Mandy started her career with Gerrard International, then known as the Natural Nail Company, the beauty industry was completely different from what it looks like today. Manicures were only available in hairdressing salons and pedicures were a rare offering. Very few beauty salons offered manicures as a service and nails bars didn’t exist.
Mandy passionately worked alongside Susan Gerrard to deliver Susan’s vision to really revolutionise the nail industry.
Mandy recalls “I initially started my career as a hairdresser and manicurist. I saw the job advertised in the Grocer magazine. I love nails and sales so this really appealed to me. In the beginning I was an Area Manager then went onto Regional Manager and then onto Sales Director. The proudest moment of my career was when we introduced the gel manicure as it was one of the first in the UK.”
Since introducing Jessica Nails to the UK market, Gerrard International’s portfolio has continued to expand with much loved brands Mii makeup, brows, tanning, manicure and pedicure, BeautyLab skincare, Hair Gain, Spongelle and Happy Paul.
Working closely with salons and spas and through our sales team, Mandy listens and delivers what salon owners, therapist and clients want. It’s this connection that makes her highly regarded within the industry with many lifelong friends.
“Mandy embodies our company ethos which is, and will always be, to listen, to learn and to improve – which I believe has enabled us to grow and will allow us to continue to shine” says Susan Gerrard, Chairman.
“The Pearl of Gerrard International, Mandy defines the very best of human qualities, woven into the very fabric of the company and at the heart of our family”. Danielle Gerrard, International Sales Manager.
Mandy says her favourite part of working for the company is being part of the Gerrard family and the passion for the industry “My thanks and love goes to Susan Gerrard whose been my mentor and dearest friend for 30 years. It’s been a blast.”
Susan shares her heartfelt thoughts “Mandy’s professional sales ability together with her empathy and warm, caring personality has gained her respect and love throughout the beauty industry. Personally, I have gained a true and loyal friend and over the 30 years we have shared fun, laughter and tears through the various episodes of our lives. Mandy, I love you dearly.”
Messages from the Area Managers …
“I have worked for Gerrard International for 21 years and have been lucky enough to have Mandy as my manager. She never fails to make me laugh, even when she is nagging me about something! I have loved our time on the road together over the years. A great manager and a true friend.” Dawn Taylor.
“I would like to say what an amazing woman Mandy is. She is such an inspiration with her hard work and the love and care she puts into her job and to the people surrounding her. She made me instantly feel at home at Gerrard International” Arlene Huggan.
“I don’t know where to begin, so many memories with Mandy, we have laughed, cried and shared many drinks together. She’s supportive, willing to listen, will help wherever possible, and give you a kick up the bum when needed! I’m lucky to have her as my boss, but even luckier to class her as my friend” Gail Brannon,
“You’ve been the most amazing manager to have all these years (even though you were pretty fierce in the early days!). You are not only my manager but have been a friend to me, and seen me and my family grow over the years.” Sarah Ball.
“Fabulous Mandy. Thank you for your never-ending support, I have learnt so much from you in the past five years and it’s been fantastic. Here’s to the next 30 years. Sending lots of love.” Clare Barton.
“I’ve known Mandy for the 30 years she’s been at Gerrard International. In Mandy’s early years as The Natural Nail Company, she was very much the professional face of the company. Mandy’s drive and effervescent enthusiasm for the brand would shine, when our paths would literally cross, whilst visiting the same salons. How wonderful that the company is recognising and celebrating this awesome commitment of achievement.” Cheryl Owens.

Hair Gain Survey Reveals UK Women’s Hair Loss Epidemic
Hair Gain was created to help the millions of women suffering with hair loss. We’re proud that Hair Gain has helped so many people restore their hair and their confidence, while breaking down the taboo of hair loss.
Hair Gain wanted to know even more about how many of women were suffering with the problem and how it was making people feel. So, in 2022 Hair Gain conducted a national survey of over 2,000 men and women, to understand even more deeply how hair loss is affecting people. The results do not make for light reading. Hair Gain discovered that the UK is in the grip of a women’s hair loss epidemic.
Women’s Hair Loss at Crisis Levels
Hair loss has been primarily thought of as a “man’s problem”, at Hair Gain this has been a suspected myth. Hair Gain’s survey revealed that 75% of UK Women said they had experienced thinning hair or hair loss. This is compared to 73% of men!
Hair Gain discovered women’s hair thinning begins much earlier than previously thought. An astounding 39% of women are suffering hair fall before the age of 35, compared with 42% of men. The severity of female hair loss was not far behind males. 40% of women with the condition stating they’d suffered from moderate to high hair fall.
Causes of Hair Loss
Hair Gain’s survey found some very interesting results. By far the biggest cause of hair loss in women was stress and anxiety. 50% cited it as the reason their hair had fallen out. A worrying statistic, but perhaps unsurprising given the stress factors we have all endured over the last few years, such as the pandemic and most recently, the cost of living crisis.
The next biggest causes of hair loss were having a baby (24%) and the menopause (16%). Meanwhile, 11% felt catching Covid had played a part, while 15% cited overstyling as the reason for their thinning tresses. Genetic reasons (3%) and diagnosed alopecia (1%) were also reasons for hair loss included in our survey.
Effects of Hair Loss on Women
The survey revealed hair loss brings about a devastating loss of confidence. Nearly 70% said their hair was important to their overall wellbeing and self-esteem. Meanwhile 55% had lost their confidence due to hair loss or thinning. Over a quarter of women felt that their hair loss had a detrimental effect on their love life. 14% of women specifically said their thinning hair had made them feel undesirable to their partner.
Meanwhile, the problem had led 31% of respondents to feel depressed. Moreover, 41% said losing their hair created a vicious circle where the anxiety and stress caused led to even more hair fall.
Seeking Help
Given the impact the hair loss epidemic is having on women, it’s perhaps no surprise that 95% of those surveyed had tried to cure it or cover it up. 56% had changed their hairstyle or asked their hairdresser for a shorter cut. 47% were using thickening shampoos and scalp treatments while 56% had used a hair growth vitamin supplement. The survey showed that unfortunately many women still feel that hair loss is a taboo. 46% of respondents felt too embarrassed to discuss the problem with a GP. Regrettably, 97% of those that did seek professional advice, felt no help was offered through their GP or the NHS.
Covid & Hair Loss
While the pandemic has fuelled general anxiety, which likely has led to a corresponding rise in hair fall, Covid was also cited as a direct cause of the problem. 11% felt it had directly caused their hair to thin. Amongst those already suffering with hair fall, 19% said it had exacerbated the situation. A notable proportion of respondents (17%) felt their hair loss or thinning had either started or got worse after getting the Covid jab.
Thoughts from Lucy Palmer, Hair Gain Founder
Lucy Palmer said: “The hair loss epidemic has dealt a devastating blow to women’s confidence and self-esteem, and the increased stress from losing their hair is causing a vicious circle. The effects on women’s lifestyles are almost wholly negative, a knock-on effect of the hair loss is that they are less likely to go out, they lose their confidence and some feel it’s blighted their love life.”
As worrying as some of the results of the survey are, it’s underlined what we felt was happening. So many women have come to us searching for a solution to the problem. We’ll continue to fight to help more women than ever before. By aiding those suffering with hair thinning or fall, and by playing our part in breaking the taboo of female hair loss.
Hair Gain is available through UK spas, salons, hair dressers and selected retailers such as Harrods.

An interview with Elaine Binder, Spongellé founderWe caught up with Elaine Binder, founder of Spongellé as part of our series, championing our female brand founders.
Why do you think it is important to recognise, and celebrate International Women’s Day?
Women around the world have contributed so much to their families, careers and life in general. Tirelessly, they have helped to keep things together even through wars, economic hardships, sickness and tragedies. Not to mention the women who have achieved great scientific and medical findings as well as those who have fought along their fellow country men and stood up for what they believed in. We are a strong group often thought of as soft and weak but have proved this not to be true. Recognising women around the world is key to the future of humanity.
Which woman do you admire the most and why?
I admire all women not just the women who are famous. The woman who struggles to put food on her table needs to be admired as well.
What is the most important advice you have been given?
To be true to yourself, make your family proud and to always do your best no matter what it is.
Lastly, If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
Never give up. If you believe in something strive to make it come to life.
What inspires you?
Life inspires me. Take off the blinders and allow the world to show you its beauty.
What are your must-have beauty products?
Spongellé of course! I love great skin care and hair care. Starting with a great bath experience using Spongellé products followed by a great facial moisturiser, eye cream, throat cream and hand cream.
Do you have any additional comments or highlights you’d like to share?
I am the founder and CEO of Spongellé, a luxury bath and body company specialising in patented body wash infused buffers, revitalising moisturisers, and one-of-a-kind diffusers. Combining research, good instincts, and creativity. As an immigrant from Ukraine, I am proof of the American dream. Plus, I am an internationally trained perfumer dedicated to discovering Spongellé’s proprietary infusion technology that offers enhanced formulas and sophisticated, custom-blended fragrances with every product. Creating a beyond cleansing experience – all proudly made in Los Angeles.
Next week, we speak to Nadia Shamsi, daughter of Jessica Vartoughian, founder of Jessica.
An interview with Nadia ShamsiWe spoke to Nadia Shamsi, daughter of Jessica Vartoughian founder of Jessica nails as part of our International Women’s Day series.
Why do you think it is important to recognize, and celebrate International Women’s Day?
Women have come a long way. We are proud, hardworking and deserve a day to celebrate all women.
Are there any situations where being a woman has positively affected your career?
I have never felt uncomfortable being a woman. In school I learned that I need to be positive and strong and I have always used that to my advantage. I think being in the beauty industry has a positive affect as a woman. You are able to understand womens needs in a better way!
What are you most proud of achieving in your career?
I am most proud that I can follow my moms footsteps and carry on her legacy.
Which woman do you admire the most and why?
It would definitely have to be my mom. She had an amazing work ethic, always dedicated to her company and had a very kind and giving heart.
What is the most important advice you have been given?
Honesty is the best policy and a lot of my moms past employees tell me to be stronger! I’m trying.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
I wish I joined the business when I was fresh out of college.
What inspires you?
I am inspired to see so many successful women making it in the world. I love hearing their stories.
What are your must-have beauty products?
I am very big on eyebrows. Mine are done every two weeks. A tweezer in between is a must. Also, I always wear sunblock, rain or shine. Last, I always have some sort of cuticle oil with me. My nails are very important to me.
Do you have any additional comments or highlights you’d like to share?
My second daughter, Amira, is born on March 8….Women’s Day! Since she was born 13 years ago, it has become an even bigger deal in our household! She’s so proud to be born on such a special day and I am so proud to call her my daughter.
Nadia’s interview concludes our celebration of women throughout March.
An interview with Lucy Palmer, founder of Hair GainThis week, we speak to Lucy Palmer, founder of Hair Gain. Hair Gain launched Hair Gain launched in 2018 and quickly gained a cult following, introducing Gummies, a Nourishing Treatment Hair Mask, and hair accessories quickly after. Helping women reduce the impact of hair loss, nationwide.
Why do you think it is important to recognise, and celebrate International Women’s Day?
I think it’s really important to shine a spotlight on the success and achievements of women to provide encouragement and positive role models for young girls and young women to aspire to. Despite progress in the right direction, recent world events like the Covid-19 pandemic has set women back and we are not near achieving gender equality in the UK. For example, even pre-pandemic, only 1 in 3 UK entrepreneurs were female – a gender gap equivalent to 1.1 million missing businesses (1). We have to push women up as hard as we can and amplify their voices. This is what International Women’s Day is for – celebration, unity, support, advocacy and action.
Are there any situations where being a woman has positively affected your career?
Hair Gain was born out of a distinctly female experience. Postpartum hair loss is a struggle that only women face and without going through this myself, I wouldn’t have gone on the journey that I did to develop a hair supplement that helps support women experiencing the same.
What, or who, inspired you to start Hair Gain?
As mentioned above, it was my own experience that started me on this journey. I suffered with extreme post-partum hair loss after the birth of my first daughter Molly nine years ago. It was such a horrible experience, I lost handfuls of hair each day and it really knocked my confidence. The more I spoke to other women the more I realised that hair loss is a huge problem and one that we tend to suffer with in silence. 8 million women in the UK suffer from hair loss at some point in their lives and there are many causes. Stress, anxiety, over-styling, hormonal fluctuations, menopause and nutritional deficiencies can all cause hair loss.
I furiously researched for an antidote that could stop the shed and help with regrowth, but found nothing that spoke to me. It made me determined to create an ultimate nutritional supplement that would feed follicles at source. My background is in nutrition and supplements and I was fortunate enough to come across an incredible ingredient called AnaGain™ which is derived from the small but mighty pea shoot.
I spent the next two years working with nutritionists and trichologists to create a world class food supplement with AnaGain™ as its central ingredient – for which I’m proud to say the Hair Gain range is now famed.
What are you most proud of achieving in your career?
My big focus at Hair Gain is to break down the taboo of hair loss. We want women to know they do not need to suffer in silence and go through it alone and I’m so proud to have developed an antidote that can help stop hair shed and help with regrowth. This is why Hair Gain was born and it brings me so much joy to see women with their hair and confidence restored knowing that Hair Gain has helped. We hear from so many women around the world who tell us that Hair Gain is the only product that has made a difference. Some have spent years suffering from hair loss and spent thousands of pounds on products to try and restore it. Nothing beats knowing that Hair Gain has given them their hair and confidence back and it’s this achievement that makes me feel proud of what I am doing every day.
Which woman do you admire the most and why?
There are too many I admire to name just one. It’s not just those in the public eye that give me inspiration though, I find it in the women around me every day.
What is the most important advice you have been given?
Don’t be ashamed to say you don’t know what you’re doing. Talk to somebody that knows more than you. There will be people out there who are better at you at certain things, lean on them, lean on friends, lean on family, lean on somebody on LinkedIn; don’t be embarrassed to say when you don’t understand.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
Don’t be afraid of failure, everyone fails, it’s part of learning and growing and you shouldn’t let that hold you back from developing and acting on your ideas.
What inspires you?
My children, my family and friends and all our lovely customers who have struggled with hair loss and been brave enough to share their story and help break down the stigma around it.
What are your must-have beauty products?
Well, the Hair Gain supplements and Hair Mask of course. I also LOVE my beauty treatments, and could not be without my eye-brow threading/tinting and getting my nails done!
Next week, we speak to Elaine Binder, founder of Spongelle
An interview with Susan GerrardWe caught up with Susan Gerrard, Gerrard International chairwoman and Mii founder.
What does being a female founder mean to you?
Using my professional experience and knowledge of the beauty industry, I feel I have empathy with other women and am proud to represent that. After about 7 years of researching and testing for the right makeup selection and manicure and pedicure range, I instinctively knew that my brand would be well received and loved. I love wearing makeup and am never seen without it. And having trained thousands of manicurists in the past nationwide, my nails are always immaculately polished. I can also multi task and am able to function being a mother, grandmother and leader in the industry.
What, or who, inspired you to start Gerrard International?
I wanted our company to be master of our own destiny. I wanted a secure future for our company, for our own brand and our lovely clients who have become to rely on us.
What are you most proud of achieving in your career?
Launching my own brand of makeup and nail care, we named it Mii.
What’s the biggest challenge you’ve had to overcome?
Apart from Covid, which has had a world-wide effect, it would be breast cancer which I had 28 years ago when I was just one year into developing my business and 12 years ago when my daughter was also diagnosed. Thankfully, all is well with both of us but we certainly make the most of every day.
What’s your top tip for anyone wanting to set up their own brand?
Do thorough research and make sure that there is a gap in the market for it
How do you get the right balance between being a business woman and the rest of your life?
I am very lucky that apart from about a team of 65 us in the business, I also have my husband Ian who is financial director, daughter Lisa who is our managing director, daughter Danielle who is director of international sales and son Paul who is our brand communications director.
So we have family time all the time which is great. I gain great pleasure from my 6 grandchildren ages from 23 to 15. We have a great circle of friends with whom I love socialising and I enjoy playing the piano which I learnt just eight years ago. I love reading cookery books and when I have time I love to bake and cook. I have to admit that I love buying clothes and have an amazing boutique called Harpers quite near to where I live. I have been a regular customer for over 50 years and their buying skills are quite unique and completely up to date with fashion from France, Italy, Spain and America.
What’s the best compliment you’ve ever had about your brand?
We have had so many amazing testimonials and they all include the ‘wow’ factor. All the compliments include the fact that the products are so easy to apply with colours and shades to suit everybody and they are loved by all. It has also been said that the foundations, mascaras, serums and hand creams are addictive!!
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
Life is not a dress rehearsal, so make every moment count. Don’t put off tomorrow what you can do today. Joan Collins once said this, and it has always stayed with me. I believe that we should treat other people how we would want to be treated.
